I care a lot about healthy living. I eat primarily vegan foods at home, and have pretty much cut red meat and pork out of my diet completely. I also don't eat sugar, flour, or dairy. I exercise on most days, and love getting into the gym for a good workout. I also enjoy my time spent on the yoga mat, building my strength and flexibility.
Although I have cared about living healthy for most of my adult life, it's importance was underscored ten years ago. That's when I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease (lupus). This vicious disease caused me to lose my hair, my job, my home, and everything on which my identity had been built. It also forced me to pay attention to what I was eating, how I was living, and how my body responded to the numerous stimulants in my life.
For me, the wellness quest is about unity of mind, body, and spirit. When I am eating, exercising, sleeping, praying, and living well, I feel good. If any one of those suffers, all of me suffers with it. I'm not perfect. Sometimes I really crave a hamburger or piece of chocolate cake. But I know those bring temporary happiness. True joy comes from somewhere much deeper.
