Nearly a decade ago, I began to notice that my mood was worse during the winter months. I was sad more than usual and felt lethargic, unmotivated and uninterested in my usual activities. Through discussing it with my therapist, I discovered I was suffering from a common malady--seasonal affective disorder. I have found taking an annual trip to a sunny and warm vacation spot in the middle of winter to be one of the most helpful tools for dealing with my SAD. I typically select Caribbean locations--the Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Jamaica--or make a short trip to Florida when that’s not possible. I try going somewhere new each year, so that I can see more and more of the world. Last week, I went to Puerto Rico for my annual winter getaway.
