Scrolling through Facebook one day last week, I came across an article in The Washington Post that intrigued me. A young, African American middle school math teacher had finished paying back his student loans. The young man, who is known as Dee-1, wrote a song celebrating his achievement, and posted a video for "Sallie Mae Back" to YouTube. I chuckled watching the video until I realized I graduated college twenty years ago. Although my undergrad loan has been paid, I still have one from grad school (16 years ago). Watching that young man's glee after receiving the loan cancellation paperwork, I made a decision to focus on getting my final student loan paid off before my 25th college reunion. This week, I sat down, calculated all my outstanding obligations, and created a plan for being debt-free in the next four years (excluding my mortgage). That's just one of the things I'm celebrating this week.
By the way, I have included a link to "Sallie Mae Back" for your enjoyment.
