I boarded a bus in DC headed to Philadelphia at 7:15 this morning. I had plans to meet my senior thesis advisor from my undergrad days 20 years ago. After falling out of touch, we reconnected in 2008, when I randomly ran into him on the street in front of the New Orleans hotel where we were both staying. He was there with a group of Penn students doing Alternative Spring Break (read: community service trip) in the Lower Ninth Ward following Katrina. I was there attending the annual ASCD conference for teachers and teacher leaders. In the ensuing years, I have reached out to him every year or so to check in, get career advice, and make sure he is taking good care of himself. This week, his assistant emailed me to ask what type of salad I wanted for lunch. We would be ordering from healthy eatery SweetGreen—a sure sign he is holding up his end of the bargain. Spending quality time talking about my plans for the future with this influential man is just one of the many things I am celebrating this week:
